In chatting with Brian at the PDAC show last year he mentioned the reason they did not drill Golden Pond last year was because the ice did not get thick enough. He said they need 32 inches of ice. I would imagine that you can only safely thicken the ice so much by pumping water onto its surface as described by Portee. Which by the way for anyone interested is the same method used to strenghten ice roads in the north as well.
