Yes, solar could be a big part of the future together with wind power. Last year, by luck not smarts, I made good money on start-up solar stocks. I sold all of them late fall and invested most of that in KXL at an average price of about $4.0, so I lost a little. I think with solar that it will take a significant time of more developments. I remember from the late 80ties that the energy required to produce solar cells, these cells had to be in operation for about 25 years to generate the same amount of energy spent in producing them. Today I am sure the energy payback time is less but it is still significant. Since most things tend to break down in about 20 years(cars, roofs etc) I suspect that solar cells overall may barely be net energy producers, but sure their time will come.
In terms of solar stocks there has been significant pull-backs the last 2-3 months and I am pretty sure that they will gain again. However, I just do not feel confortable enough to go back into solar stocks and instead I will stick with my KXL as well as Kinross as an actual producer. Based on the fairly rapid rate of gold containing vein discoveries I see no reason why KXL should drop in price.
Maybe because I do not know about them, I completely lack info or news on companies related to windpower. Windpower is becoming pretty big in Europe so why not here.
