Good for you to actually try to make something out of the energy issue. I suspect there is lots of competiton in that area, but yes you are young with lots of energy so I hope you make it big.
In terms of coal gasification they add steam(water vapour) to coal to react fo form hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Adding hydrgoen to a combustion engine may increase its efficiency, but I always had issues with hydrogen in that it takes a lot of energy to produce hydrogen in the first place. It is an expensive additive, but who knows it may overall be a good thing.
Fuel cells on a mass scale I think are pretty much dead, unless we find/develop excess cheap re-newable energy to use to generate hydrogen. If in your idea/concept you only need hydrogen as a small fraction almost like a catalyst you may be onto something.
