Message: Hydro-Quebec under pressured to close Gentilly-2 nuclear plant

MONTREAL — A coalition wants Hydro-Quebec to close Gentilly-2, the province’s only nuclear power plant.

The call comes as Japan struggles with its tsunami-crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

Located in Becancour, near Trois-Rivieres, the Gentilly-2 reactor produces about three per cent of Quebec’s electricity.

On April 13 and 14, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is to hold public hearings about a $2-billion plan to refurbish Gentilly-2, which opened in 1983.

Mouvement Sortons le Quebec du Nucleaire — which includes scientists, artists and groups such as Greenpeace, the David Suzuki Foundation and Nature Quebec — is to hold a news conference about its demand on Monday.

The coalition says it opposes the plant because of the potential risk to human health.

Government of Canada Invests in Renewable Energy Projects in Quebec

SAGUENAY, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - March 18, 2011) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Member of Parliament for Jonquière–Alma, today announced funding for two hydroelectric dams in the City of Saguenay. The ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program is expected to provide about $6.9 million over ten years to the city for the two dams, Centrale Chute-Garneau and Centrale Pont-Arnaud.

"Investing in clean energy technologies stimulates the growth of a domestic clean energy industry, creating high-quality jobs for Canadians," said Minister Blackburn.

Both hydro projects have been refurbished and are expected to be commissioned later this month. The Pont-Arnaud and Chute-Garneau projects have a combined capacity of more than 13 megawatts and are capable of generating enough electricity to power more than 7000 homes. The electricity produced will be sold to Hydro-Québec.

Since 2006, the Government of Canada has invested more than $10 billion to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build a more sustainable environment through investments in green infrastructure, energy efficiency, clean energy technologies and the production of cleaner energy and cleaner fuels.

The Government has developed a broad suite of policies and programs to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020 — a target aligned with that of the United States.

"Moving forward aggressively with investments in clean energy technologies will help us balance our need for energy with our need to protect the environment," said Minister Blackburn.

Today's announcement builds on the success of many initiatives, helping to sustain and enhance Canada's clean energy industry.

They should remember about mercury. It comes from the dams. There's a risk with most.
