Regulators Back 'Fracking' in New York

New York state regulators will recommend Friday that the use ofhydraulic fracturing to drill for natural gas be allowed in much of thestate, but remain banned in areas that supply drinking water to New YorkCity and Syracuse, officials said Thursday.

The draft report bythe state Department of Environmental Conservation must still beadopted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. But the endorsement of the view thathydraulic fracturing can be done safely in New York, even within strictguidelines, is a victory for natural-gas producers.
