I cannot confirm or deny the validity of Tada's statement below. Drug discovery often involves starting with an enormous library and then narrowing down the compound families/structures that are active. However, I wasn't aware of or following RVX 10 or 11 years ago when Tada said that the 300,000 molecule statement was made. 

Tada's statement was "At the time the RVX scientists were trying to figure out which of the 300,000 molecules they had identified would do the best job of improving the functions of genes that affected some 86 human diseases. Where we are today is the result of about 19 Years of research by the team at RVX."
