Tissues that make a lot of steroid hormones (i.e. adrenal glands, gonads) also express high levels of SRBI and take up cholesterol from HDL. Perhaps Reverse Cholesterol Transport isn't the best term for these steroidogenic tissues. However, these tissues catabolize cholesterol by using it to make hormones. The liver catabolizes cholesterol by converting cholesterol to bile acids or secreting free cholesterol directly into the bile. The loss of bile acids and cholesterol from the body via fecal loss of these molecules constitutes a net loss of cholesterol from the body.
