You're analogy of a circa 1950's maternity ward waiting room took my memory back to an old episode of 'I Love Lucy'.  Ricky and Fred were in the waiting room with an old guy who was waiting on the news....he already had 6 girls and he was hoping for a boy.  When the nurse came to get him he asked, "Is it a girl"? and the nurse answered that it was not....he was all excited until they brought in 3 girls, his wife had triplets.  Fred remarked that he could have his own all girl softball team.
