I'm pretty sure that patient hours/days/years for a given patient count up until the time of dropout/discontinuation. In other words, they do not disregard that patient's data. Sorry I have no reference for you. Dropouts/discontinuations are the norm for most clinical trials. Look up any recent cardiovascular outcomes trial and you will find dropout/discontinuation numbers.
