I wouldn't be too pessimistic. After all, we have vaccines against influenza viruses and the Chinese have recently made a breakthrough in one for Swine influenza.
The vaccines currently being tested do not use modified/inactivated viruses. They contain the piece of the coronavirus' RNA that codes for the protein on the surface of the virus that binds to our cells. When it's injected, our cells start to manufacture the protein which then stimulates the production of antibodies to the protein. So our bodies get programmed to kill the virus without ever having been exposed to it. This is how the Ebola vaccine works.
