The spike proteins are on the surface of the virus, and bind to the ACE2 receptors on our cells. They're the key that "unlocks" the door into the cell. Block that and the virus can't get in. And without getting in, it can't multiply (because they don't actually do so under their own steam like bacteria, they effectively cause the cell to manufacture more of themselves).
