I am not qualified to answer your query but maybe I can offer some numbers that might spur someone more learned than I to offer some advice. The numbers I give are sourced from the article at the link below. It is from two months ago but is Alberta data which is most pertinent to our discussion. Is it possible from looking at the inclusion data that a patient almost has to be in ICU to meet the requirements? The fact is that there aren’t many vaccinated patients in ICU. That is mostly non-vaccinated patients. Yes, it would appear that there is still enough vaccinated patients but we don’t know where the acceptable level is. Nothing says it is right at the level that gets you put into ICU. Maybe there are many in ICU that still don’t meet the requirements. Maybe RVX set the barrier very high to make sure we don’t have another failure and the efficacy of the vaccines surprised them. This is all above me so informed input is welcome.
In the article, they state that there were 217 unvaxxed in hospital for 24/100,000 and 218 vaxxed with at least one shot for 8/100,000. On the surface, that appears to be lots of vaxxed and these are the numbers most bantered by anti-vaxxers. The facts though are that vaxxed infected persons carry less virus for a shorter time and transmit less.
When we look at ICU patients, the numbers reverse. There were 47 unvaxxed in ICU for 5.2/100,000 while only 18 vaxxed (at least one shot) for 0.5/100,000. Of those with two shots, it was 0.4/100,000.
I hope we get some informed comments on the inclusion requirements that might shed some light on whether there are really that few vaxxed patients within these numbers that qualify to explain why we need unvaxxed patients for the trial. It does show that there aren’t many vaxxed available. Maybe in Brazil where there might be many unvaxxed that are that way other than by their choice plus the numbers in a huge country that we can meet our quota quickly once they start.
