You're right about security. Traps. There is always a thief or two around a gold camp!

When I worked underground at Giant a labourer showed up one day who had heard somewhere you could just wash off the muck-pile and fill your pockets/lunchpail with gold. We (the crowd in the lunch-room) soon brought him up to speed on Giant muck. No visible gold let alone big chunks!

We suggested he try Discovery where they mined very high grade veins that were rumoured to house much visible Gold.

Off he went.

Final result: The muck at Discovey wasn't rich enough either, so he proceded to steal 2 bars, made his way back to YK where he bought the boys/girls at the Gold Range several rounds before flying to Hay River with the loot disappearering for 4 years before authorities caught up to him ranching in Australia!

During his abscence he'd also bought a commercial fishing boat and worked successfully along the coast of Florida!
