if you need something to barter with, i suggest "junk" silver coins. dimes, quarters and half-dollars were 90% silver in america until 1964, and i believe they were 80% silver in canada till 1965. everyone recognizes them and knows what they are worth, and a dime should be a small enough denomination for use in making retail purchases.
