As a main shaft is blasted downward, stations are established 50' or more apart as the shaft is cut deeper. Each station is a place to begin tunneling or drifting out from the main shaft.

Stations, or levels, are commonly spaced at regular depth intervals and are either numbered from the surface or designated by their depth below the top of the shaft.
