Great information! Thanks for correcting my fuzzy recollections. I guess locating "lost" mines by finding a pile of ore and looking for the opening involves a bit more work than I had imagined. Sounds like my basic premise is correct, but I hadn't though about how much rubble could build up over the years.

When you talk about unexploited veins such as Bonanza, it reminds me of just how big the resources here are. Hundreds of tons of ore, all those previously producing mines that are nowhere near played out, plus all the undiscovered veins and deposits. Considering the advances in geology and exploration since this area was last mined, the potential is pretty impressive.
