I rarely buy at the bid because you can't fill a decent size order to fill that way. Sure, during periods of sideways price movements you can pick prices around the bid and pick up some shares, but you'll never accumulate enough shares to make any real difference in your life and factoring in trading cost with all the partial fills, this strategy rarely makes since for serious share accumulation. Besides, life is short and once I've made up my mind on a particular size of share purchase, I like to get my allocation filled and move on with the day!
