once upon a time there were only three silver stocks: sunshine, hecla and coeur. during the long bear market in silver, sunshine went out of business, hecla turned to gold mining to stay in business, and coeur issued a few hundred billion shares.

i doubt that anyone under the age of 80 actually owns any shares of coeur d'alene, especially since there are so many better alternatives in the silver space. but today the company issued a news release indicating there will be a 1-for-10 reverse split. i don't know anything that says "we messed up" better than a reverse stock split. that's a maneuver i would expect of some shady business like a money center bank. but then maybe coeur just got tired of being a penny stock.
