He is also a distinguished recipient of the 1982 U.S. Department of Energy's Superior Achievement Award and holds a U.S. Patent on a coal conversion process (U.S. Patent No, 4, 337, 142, June 29, 1982).
Prior to joining Silverado in 2000, he founded Coal-Water Fuel Services, a formation of multi-disciplinary engineering teams. He served as the principal investigator for the Alaska Low-Rank Coal-Water Fuel Demonstration Project as well as the director of the Fuels and Process Chemistry Research Institute, Energy & Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota.
A former visiting professor of coal science and technology for The Mineral Industry Research Laboratory at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, he also worked with the U.S. Department of Energy as manager of gasification and liquefaction at the Grand Forks Energy Technology Center.
He previously held positions with Occidental Research Corporation, EI DuPont de Nemours Co., and the Natural Resources Research Institute at the University of Wyoming.
