Mississippi governor touts CTL fuels at Air Force energy forum

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour (R) in a speech earlier this month emphasized the vital role coal-to-liquid (CTL) fuels can play in strengthening national security.  Barbour’s speech kicked-off a major U.S. Air Force energy security forum in Arlington, Va., that focused on strategies for helping meet future Air Force energy needs.

“Energy and our economy and our national security will be totally intertwined,” said Barbour, noting that America’s prosperity has always been linked to the availability of affordable energy.  Regarding CTL fuels, Barbour said strengthening America’s national security requires that the nation reduce its dependence on imported oil and hailed the Air Force for its continuing efforts to transition towards using clean CTL aviation fuels.

U.S. Air Force Assistant Secretary for Installations, Environment and Logistics William Anderson noted at the March 3 forum that the Air Force is committed to helping drive technological innovation and carbon dioxide emission reductions through projects like a proposed CTL plant at Montana’s Malmstrom Air Force Base.  Under that plan, the Air Force would lease land to a private developer who would finance and construct a facility capable of producing 25,000 barrels per day of CTL fuel.  The Air Force on Feb. 29 issued a final request for qualifications (RFQ) for the proposed plant. Proposals must be submitted to the Air Force by May 2.
