A 10.7 kilogram gold nugget entrusted to New South Wales Treasury for safekeeping was put in a box and used as a makeshift hallway cricket wicket.

The strange sequence of events was revealed by Premier Mike Baird during a speech on Tuesday at the Australian Museum in Sydney.

He said years ago the State Government was considering where to put the nugget, which is about the size of a loaf of bread.

'Someone studiously decided they'd place it in a box,' Said Mr Baird.

'The problem was they forgot to tell anyone and that box became used for hallway cricket.'

The box continued to be used as a wicket for off-the-cuff games until one day someone decided to wedge it open with a hammer and chisel. The giant gold bullion was found.

The gold bullion was mined in Maitland, 40 km west of Newcastle, in 1887
