CNN spotlights CTL fuels
CNN recently aired two pieces promoting the role domestically produced coal-to-liquid (CTL) fuels can play in reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil.
Both features aired on CNN’s American Morning program, one of the network’s flagship news programs, which runs from 6-9 a.m. (Eastern) weekdays. The first piece aired on May 13 and is a general overview by CNN Senior Business Correspondent Ali Velshi that examines the potential for using coal to domestically produce gasoline. The piece is available here.
The second piece aired May 14 and profiles a new CTL technology meant to further reduce CTL carbon dioxide emissions. That piece is available here.
National Mining Association emphasizes need for CTL fuels at Senate hearing
The National Mining Association (NMA) emphasized the ability of coal to provide American consumers and businesses with an affordable and clean supply of domestically made transportation fuels.
At a May 16 Senate Republican Conference forum, chaired by Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), NMA Chief Economist and Policy Analyst Paul Georgia stressed that domestic coal can be used to produce clean coal-to-liquid (CTL) fuels, which provide an invaluable opportunity to strengthen the nation’s energy independence.
The May 16 forum was held to examine rising fuel costs and ways Congress can promote American energy sources that help ease the strain on family budgets, while also strengthening American energy independence.
The development of a viable domestic CTL industry in the U.S. has the potential to expand coal utilization beyond electricity generation to the transportation sector and help provide Americans with a more affordable source of fuel, while reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign oil, said Georgia. Domestically produced CTL fuels could supply the U.S. military with a secure supply of domestic fuel and help create thousands of new jobs across the nation, he said.
A copy of NMA’s testimony is available here.
CTL conference set for June in Pittsburgh
The CTLtec Americas 2008 summit is set for June 23-24 in Pittsburgh, Pa., and will bring together leading industry experts to discuss the latest developments regarding coal-to-liquid (CTL) fuel production. Among those slated to speak at the conference are representatives from leading coal producing and technology developing members of the Coal-to-Liquids Coalition.
Key among the issues that will be addressed at the summit is the projected potential of CTL and biomass technologies to help pave the way for an energy independent America. The summit will also address 2008 key environmental issues, including carbon dioxide storage and management, and CTL water management practices.
This will be the sixth year the conference has been held, but marks the first time the conference will take place in the U.S. The previous five events have all been held in China.
More information, including registration information and a detailed program, is available here.
Become a CTL grassroots supporter
The Coal-to-Liquids Coalition is working to build a strong network of grassroots supporters willing to contact federal and state lawmakers to voice their support for measures meant to spur the domestic production of affordable, clean-burning CTL fuels. CTL grassroots supporters can include company employees, union members, retirees, their families, friends and others spread across the country who share a personal stake in the successful launch of a domestic CTL industry.
A robust CTL grassroots network can be an invaluable tool in helping to increase the bipartisan support for legislation designed to jumpstart the production of ultra-clean CTL fuels.

New CTL fact sheets available at www.futurecoalfuels.org
The Coal-to-Liquids Coalition (CTLC) has posted on its web site five new fact sheets demonstrating the many benefits America stands to gain through the domestic production and use of clean coal-to-liquids (CTL) transportation fuels. The fact sheets detail the economic and national security benefits of CTL fuels, detail the environmental improvements made possible by CTL fuel and thoroughly explain the production process and techniques used to capture and store carbon dioxide emissions.
The fact sheets are available on the homepage of the CTLC at www.futurecoalfuels.org. Click on “Get the Facts on CTL” to see the latest CTLC fact sheets.
