SUBJECT
VMS; " VOLCANIC MASSIVE SULPHIDES"
This term is used throughout the geological world and is indicative of massive sulphides however is no indication as to the economic potential of the zone encountered.
It is usually a geological formation of a multiple group of minerals such as pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and possibly others such as nickel bearing pyrrhotite and or pentlandite or palladium and platinum minerals.
The different minerals have different colors and can be distingquished such as chalcopyrite (greenish)
Copper bearing and a further example of brownish colored zinc bearing sphalerite along with others.
These minerals along with others in the matrix indicate specific minerals but do not indicate the quantity or percentage which at best is an educated guess on the part of the geologist or examiner of the zone and the only positive way to evaluate the economics of the zone is by assay.
Due to the usually multiple mix of the minerals it is usually hazardous to estimate with any degree of accuracy the economic concentration and assaying should be the only means to arrive at any economic conclusion as to the percentage of the individual mineral content within the matrix.
This term "VMS" is a widely used term in the geological profession however is not any indication as to economics. When used the term should always be qualified as to the predominate mineral contained and although the percentage of the mineral can be guessed at should never be used in any economic appraisal of the zone encountered.
