I understand where you are coming from. The lure of the pure exploration play is the idea that you could hit a homerun. The flip side is what happened to EC yesterday. There is a company with a great story and address but the first couple of holes don't find any gold and WHAM!! In this case I averaged down as I still like the story and feel that it was only 2 holes.
I do have to admit though that these type of companies occupy a smaller part of my portfolio than they used to as I had more losers than winners as well.
So now I look for companies that have proven gold and are still looking to expand their find. As an example, some day at some price, I think,(JMO), EVG is going to be a great stock. I just don't know when and at what price yet. I probably won't get in at the bottom but that will be ok as I would rather see it stabalize before I jump in.
