The real problem is that we have passed the point of no return on energy. The low hanging fruit is history. Seeing that it will now take more than the energy equivalent of a barrel's worth of oil to produce same, we are literally living on fumes in the twilight of the age of oil. What remains to be seen is how much damage we will inflict on ourselves in the process of pretending that none of this is true.
