Oct 14 (Reuters) - Shares of Canadian metals producer 5N Plus rose as much as 7 percent to their highest level in 14 months, after its major customer, First Solar , said it plans to build two new manufacturing plants to meet strong demand.
5N Plus, which earns most of its revenue from supplying cadmium telluride (CdTe) -- used in making thin film photovoltaic modules, is expected to get additional orders from First Solar's new plants, which are likely to be built in the United States and Vietnam and completed in 2012. [ID:nN14108152]
"We expect the additional capacity to translate into increased orders for VNP," Clarus Securities said in a note.
The new factories will further extend First Solar's previously announced capacity additions, including eight lines in Malaysia, four lines in Germany and two lines in France.
"We expect VNP to supply at least 40 percent of First Solar's requirements in 2012," the brokerage said in a note to clients.
5N Plus could announce yet another renewal of its First Solar contract including increased volumes, the brokerage added.
The success of thin-film market leader First Solar, which uses CdTe in its modules and has the lowest costs in the industry, and favorable government regulations have prompted firms such as GE Inc , Q-Cells and privately held Abound Solar to shift towards CdTe.
5N Plus -- the name comes from the 99.999 percent purity of its products, or five nines and more -- also has contracts with Q-Cells' unit Calyxo GmbH and Abound Solar to supply cadmium telluride.
Shares of the company, which touched a year-low of C$4.70, were trading up 4 percent at C$6.22 Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange. They touched a session high of C$6.44 earlier.
