Here's how I look at this:

Big Scary Problem somewhere in the world (somehow these problems seem to be more important during Aug-Oct.)

Markets tank in anticipation of disaster.

The last scared investor runs for the hills sometime in October - markets make important bottom.

Year end rally starts when disaster doesn't strike.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've seen this movie before....
