Sustainable Energy Market Update: Trade Shows in Greece and Spain

Thin Film Partners Previews Gen II Parallel Architecture for Thin Film PV

Highlights:

- Gen II massively parallel architecture for thin film PV previewed at Eco-Tech Exhibition in Athens

- Market response very positive with requests for quotation already received on more than 5 MW of new thin film PV projects

- Industry leaders Salicru and Techno Sun to introduce Gen II at major Spanish tradeshow in Madrid in May

- Simplicity and safety of massively parallel architecture seen as opening mainstream distribution channels to solar PV products

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 20, 2009) - Sustainable Energy Technologies Ltd (TSX VENTURE:STG) ("Sustainable Energy" or the "Company") is pleased to announce that early market responses to its second generation inverter platform and value of the massively parallel system architecture for thin film PV has been very positive.

Athens Greece: April 3 - 6, 2009

Sustainable Energy's Gen II massively parallel architecture for thin film PV systems was previewed in Greece by Thin Film Partners www.thinfilm.gr at the Eco-tech Exhibition in Athens over the weekend of April 3 - 6, 2009. Market response since the show has been very positive and the Company has received requests for quotations on a large number of thin film PV projects in Greece and neighboring countries totaling more than 5 MW.

"This was the first major PV exhibition in Greece since the moratorium was lifted in January earlier this year, and the market is clearly taking off," said Michael Carten, President & CEO of the Company. "We are very excited about the early interest in the Gen II product which will be available for sale this summer. Especially significant is the interest in the value of the massively parallel system architecture - which is still new to most project developers - for ground based thin film PV systems."

"For ground based thin film PV projects, the parallel architecture simplifies system design and wiring. With our thin film partners, we are able to deliver bundled solutions at one of the lowest installed costs per watt in the industry," added Carten.

Madrid Spain: May 12 - 14, 2009

Sustainable Energy also announced that power electronics leader, Salicru S.A. www.salicru.com will launch Sustainable Energy's Gen II inverter under the "Equinox" label at the prestigious Genera Exhibition from May 12 - 14 in Madrid Spain. The Equinox product line will be distributed through Salicru's extensive network of building products suppliers.

Key to this market is the simplicity and safety of the massively parallel system architecture, which largely eliminates the need for PV specialists and site specific custom system design opening up mainstream channels for distribution of PV products generally. Sustainable Energy's patented inverter technology is the only inverter to enable a massively parallel architecture with an industry standard form factor and with the high electrical conversion efficiencies that the industry needs.

Spain has mandated that at least 2/3 of all solar PV systems be building based, and it is targeting approximately 900 MW of new rooftop installations over the next 3 years.

Techno Sun, one of Spain's largest and most respected wholesale distributors of solar PV systems, will also be launching the Gen II inverter under the SUNERGY II label at the Genera exhibition.

About Sustainable Energy: Based in Calgary, Canada, Sustainable Energy (www.sustainableenergy.com) designs and manufactures advanced power inverters for the solar power industry.

Advanced power inverters are a critical enabler of all modern solar PV power systems converting the direct current ("DC") power output of the solar PV modules into the high quality alternating current ("AC") power required by the power grid. Advanced power inverters also optimize the performance of the solar PV modules and maintain the integrity and safety of the interconnection with the power grid.

Sustainable Energy has developed and patented an inverter design which is a breakthrough in solar inverter technology. It is the only inverter design which allows grid connected solar PV systems to be designed using a "massively parallel" architecture with an industry standard form factor and with electrical conversion efficiencies that meet or exceed industry leaders.

Conventional inverter technologies require that solar panels be installed using a "series" architecture.

- With the series architecture any reduction in power from one panel results in reduced power from all the panels in the string resulting in a disproportionate reduction in total system output. This will typically be caused by partial shading from normal building congestion (e.g. from chimneys, parapets, railings power lines, telecommunications towers, etc) and from variance in orientation of the panels (building corners and curves).

- The series architecture also requires long strings of panels (10 - 15 per string) all identically matched and oriented to the sun. In rooftop and building integrated solar applications, the limits of geometry (arranging long strings in a limited space), the potential for shading from building congestion (HVAC, cornices and parapets, railings etc) and the potential for variances in orientations (corners and curves) can severely limits utilization of the available space.

With a "massively parallel" architecture each panel operates independently of other panels in the string at its optimum power output. In a parallel architecture PV panels can be installed one at a time enabling much higher penetration of the available space. Even the potential for partial shading of one of more panels is less threatening to system performance, since only the shaded module has reduced performance.
