One thing to consider is that the strength in gold has been primarily dollar based over the last few day. That is the dollar has dropped like a stone and gold its counterpart has gone up in U.S. currency

Because the dollar has dropped relative to other currencies, those currencies have risen and the price rise of gold in those currencies has been muted.

I believe that is why the usual trend of high in the morning, killed in the U.S. market has changed to weak in the morning, strong throughout the day.

Gold still continues to progress against all currencies but each currency experiences different growth spurts.
