I think we live in a different world.
The U.S. doesn't control gold, and I don't think they're capable of it anymore. If they don't value it, the rest of the world will, and will benefit. The U.S. will be a banana republic if they try to control the price of gold at an artificially low price.
The world economies are so intertwined that they can't seize all of the gold owned by their citizens -it's sitting in vaults in other countries.
Their trick this time around will be to inflate until gold is worth a fortune, and Fort Knox will be more of a factor in saving the economy.
