Governments and banking systems intentionally debase their currencies as a form of taxation on the populace. They get to spend money that they don't have at its current value and as a result of more dollars chasing the same goods, the dollars held by the general populace are reduced in value over time.

There are some people who like gold as an investment and a protection from the above mentioned entities. Some of them are prominent and vocal. Some of them manage money.

The governments and banking system resent those who point out what they are doing and so they not only manipulate the markets to keep the price of things they don't like down; they do it selectively.

Can I prove this, No! But the last time I checked two plus two still equals four.

Whenever governments and banks try to control markets or portions thereof, eventually the trend wins out. Often the stocks beaten up the most prove to be the best winners from their respective lows when the break in governmental power over the markets occurs.
