NO They can't.

A market can never be succesfully manipulated against the trend forever. To manipulate takes money. If they print the money to do the manipulation then inflation starts. Inflation puts more pressure on the gold price to go up. They print more money or sell their remaining gold and finally everybody gets wind of what's going on and it blows up in their faces.

Happens every time it's tried.
