Yes, in a way, gold is not the enemy to the great powers; it has merely been a tool.

Now, if that tool comes to be used in the opposite way (boosted instead of struck down), that could certainly lead where we are hoping. One would think that if the grand game not only shifts, but turns 180 degrees, many who were "against" gold will then be "for" it, and will most likely have most of it.

The frustrating part is, in reality, we simply do not know what is going to happen...
