It is not so much the idea but the extent.

If true the entire 8000 tonnes of gold in Fort Knox has been reduced to a gold plating on tungsten bars. The largest horde of gold on the planet has been looted. As Kirby pointed out it makes "Operation Grandslam" of Ian Fleming's Goldfinger a reality.

Further that much and a bit more is also out and mixed in with the rest of the world's gold supply. Unless someone has the numbers and 'fesses up, no one can buy a good for delivery bar from any of the metal exchanges with confidence unless they know and can trace the history of that bar.

We still do know this story is itself golden or gold plated but we shouldn't be too much longer in finding out.

We're talking about nearly 10% of all the gold mined in the history of the world here.
