Personally, I don't believe that at all, I think there is massive manipulation. All you have to do is watch the action in one of the affected stocks to see there is....how many times on a strong gold day, The sellers show up selling thousands of shares to hold the price back(thousands of shares that are likely phantom)..The US has the exchange stabilization fund which is real and no fantasy. It is there to manipulate whatever they desire.
