That was a great link, Rac, but things take so long to get through all the airworthiness approvals for an Operating Certificate. I think Discovery Air, if they achieve this, will take more than just 2 years.
Imagine one of them just plucking up a sea container and hauling it up to Tyhee in the middle of the summer. That would be great!
LTA ships would be great for the arctic, hauling heavy equipment year round and as the crow flies. The only problem is what to do with them in high winds, which occur routinely in the Arctic. A hangar the size of the one down in San Diego is not an option, far too expensive. So a rugged airship than can be tied down in high winds will be quite a challenge.
I hope they succeed, but won't hold my breath.
