An asteroid will have a very close encounter with the Earth next week -- speeding past on an eyebrow-raising flyby that will bring it nearly as close as the moon.

However, there`s no chance of a ``Deep Impact`` type of disaster -- the space rock is not going to smash into the planet, experts say.

``It won`t be necessary to run for cover. Just enjoy the close approach,`` said Brian Marsden, director of the Cambridge, Mass.-based Minor Planet Center, an organization that studies asteroids.
