Sharp, Fujitsu to recall laptop batteries made by Sony AP TOKYO (AP) - Japanese electronics makers Sharp and Fujitsu announced plans Friday to recall laptop batteries made by Sony, adding to an already massive global recall. Sharp Corp. said that it was recalling 28,000 Sony-made battery packs for seven laptop models plus separately sold batteries, all for domestic use, according to company spokesman Hiroshi Takenami. He said the company so far has received no reports of accidents, as in the United States. "We decided to recall the batteries to ensure safety for our customers," Takenami said. The recalls come after the discovery that the batteries can short-circuit and cause some computers to overheat. Another electronics maker, Fujitsu, also said that it was to replace 51,000 more laptop batteries by Sony around the world, following a similar move earlier this month covering 287,000 Sony-made laptop batteries worldwide. Toshiaki Koike, spokesman for Tokyo-based Fujitsu Ltd., said the latest move will bring the total number of Sony-made batteries to 338,000, involving 35 models globally. There were no reports of injuries or damage to stored data from users around the world, Koike said. Of the total, 260,000 lithium-iron batteries made by Sony for its laptop personal computers were exported, including the United States. No specific figures for each exporting country were not immediately available, Koike said. Nearly every major laptop maker has told customers to return Sony-made lithium ion batteries. The largest recalls have been issued by Dell Inc., with 4.2 million batteries affected, and Apple Computer Inc., with 1.8 million batteries. Sony expects costs of at least US$170 million (euro133 million) related to the Dell and Apple recalls
