IFE-to-go from InMotion Entertainment
November 6, 2006 – IN THE heat and dust of the debate about embedded versus handheld IFE systems it’s easy to lose sight of the third way – DVD rental at major airports.
The leading exponent of this model is US company InMotion Entertainment, which has just announced the opening of its latest airport outlet, at Pittsburgh International. Travellers passing through can now pick up a DVD player and choice of films from the InMotion booth in the airport’s Airmall concession area.
InMotion is present at a total of 29 US airports as well as Pittsburgh - including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis-St Paul, New Orleans, New York JFK, Newark and LaGuardia, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington Dulles - and New York’s Grand Central Station.
Its locations offer DVD players, films and music for hire. A basic $15 per day covers the player, 4hr rechargeable battery, headset, branded carrying case and one film; extra films are available for $4 each. Content may also be hired and played on the traveller’s own laptop or entertainment device.
Orders may also be placed in advance on a toll-free number, and the company is about to introduce an online reservation service, allowing the customer to make a selection, pay online and pick up the player and pre-loaded content at the airport.
After use the player and accessories can be dropped off at an InMotion location or shipped back to the company via UPS, using packaging and pre-paid postage supplied with the original order.
