"Threatening to separate Sony from millions of snapshot-loving Americans proved effective. Less than four months later, Sony agreed to pay $40 million to use Ampex patents to manufacture and sell digital tape recorders, cameras and other products through April 2006."
While we have no idea as to the final outcome of EDIG's patent protection efforts, we do know that companies threatened with losing market share view settlement of patent infringement as part of the "cost of doing business".
I'm guessing AMPEX saw this as the best case scenario: a $40 million settlement in a mere four months.
What would a judgement along those lines mean to this investment?
Now consider 174 companies all thinking along the same lines. I'd venture to say just one settlement of this magnitude turns this investment into a big winner from here.
We are well over a year into the process, have identified the targets and have IP specialists on board on a contingency basis. Do you think DM LLP has estimated the magnitude of their take prior to taking on this case?
