Lernout & Hauspie who currently hold the license for DNS continue to trade
(after serious financial problems) but are understood to be looking towards
selling part of its intellectual property, possibly including DNS rights. A
new business plan is expected in September 2001, that produce in June 2001
having been
rejected by the Courts.
DNS continues to be commercially available and there is no evidence that
regular outlets now have supply difficulties - at least in the UK.
The reason for the lack of enthusiasm about ViaVoice is that in the
educational sector (if not generally), the experience is very poor indeed.
DNS is vastly superior for many different reasons.
Our own view is that those reviewers notching Viavoice up above DNS are
doing so because of arbitrary reasons rather than sound technical evidence.

IBM's technology is called Via Voice and L&H must have been cooking the books back in November 2000. (Not 2001 as I recalled. This article was written in July 2001 and by that time L&H was already in trouble and dealing with the courts. As some may remember Fred Falk bought additional shares in late summer 2000 on the basis of what he expected to be a significant business development for EDIG. At that point in time he didn't forsee the troubles ahead for their partner L&H.
