It's all about Discrete manipulation of data segments through their logic steps......it does not necessarily have to happen within flash.

It can happen from any memory, volatile or nonvolatile.

With that ability of the OS comes a bonus....allowing them to create a primary memory out of flash, where the gain, IMO, is device management and not necessarily storage.
