Juxtaposing the following two paragraphs from your post gives us the CLUE...
MEZZO CEO SAID:
"We are offering a range of new services within the system which represents a significant step forward for our offering in the areas of hardware, content, financing, servicing and integration,” he says. “We will offer airlines a wide choice of handsets, as well as a new service to measure system performance and track handsets, batteries, chargers and carts to minimise wastage and improve utilisation.” ...
EDIG CEO SAID:
“We have made significant progress on porting our core technology to a lightweight, flexible embedded solution,” he declared. “We believe that joint efforts with major airline and airframe companies will yield an embedded eVU system that will offer improved reliability, substantial product and weight/fuel cost savings, and other benefits.”
We can see that Edig is talking about "...porting the core technology to a light weight, flexible embedded solution", and Mezzo is talking about offering a NEW SYSTEM with “an unparalleled level of support, flexibility, reliability and customer service.”
If Mezzo is talking about an embedded system, that falls within the scope of a newley ported eVU to be stuck on a back of a seat, or be embbeded in the aircraft, with support coming from Mezzo.
I see no indication that mezzo is planning to use another hardware, junless it is trevealed that IMS, or Panosonic harware will be replacing eVU...
