“Handhelds for OpenSkies,” says pre-AIX grapevine

March 30, 2008 – OPENSKIES, the new transatlantic operation being set up by British Airways, will include handheld IFE in its cabin product, according to the rapidly accelerating pre-Aircraft Interiors rumour mill.

OpenSkies is the British flag carrier’s bid to exploit the new ruling of the same name, which comes into effect today, that allows airlines to fly between any US and European Union destination.

BA says it is on track to launch OpenSkies this summer, describing it as “a truly premium and intimate travel experience from Continental Europe to New York.” The first aircraft, a Boeing 757 from the carrier’s existing fleet, is now being refitted. It will feature winglets to boost fuel economy and range, and a three-class, 82-seat interior.

“Biz” class will have 24 seats able to convert into 6ft fully flat beds. “Prem+” will offer 28 premium seats with, says BA, more legroom than any other premium economy product. Economy will have 30 leather seats.

OpenSkies aims to operate from a number of European cities to New York, beginning with Paris. A second 757 is due to be added later this year, and a further four by the end of next year.
