Microsoft Loses $367 Million Patent Judgment; Plans Appeal
SAN FRANCISCO -- Microsoft Corp. said Friday a jury has ordered it to pay $367 million in damages to Alcatel-Lucent in a patent infringement trial. A Microsoft spokesman said the company plans to seek to have the verdict overturned. The patents asserted against Microsoft in the trial in U.S. District Court in San Diego are among a number being litigated by the companies in an ongoing case that originated in 2003. The most high-profile decision stemming from the case was handed down last year, when Microsoft was ordered to pay $1.5 billion for infringing Alcatel-Lucent patents related to MP3 technology -- a judge later reversed that decision, however.
