AT&T has announced that it’s going to be releasing MediaFLO mobile TV in May. The company is a little bit behind the times; Verizon has made MediaFLO accessible to customers for nearly a year and AT&T itself planned this launch to take place at the end of 2007.

MediaFLO, a subsidiary of Qualcomm, uses former television channels to provide real time broadcasts to mobile phone customers over a network that is separate from the standard cellular network.
"The business model for FLO is complicated, involving MediaFLO, content providers and advertisers, with revenue coming from both subscribers and advertisers, (Forrester Research analyst Charles) Golvin said. AT&T's launch might have been delayed by negotiations that went on longer than expected."
In addition to the services provided here in the U.S., the mobile TV technology is being tested out in Europe and Asia although those countries seem to be leaning in favor of an alternative technology called DVB-H. Some have suggested that Echostar’s recent acquisitions in the FCC’s 700 MHz spectrum auction could provide another mobile TV alternative for consumers to consider.
