LOS ANGELES, April 11, 2008 - Duane Morris LLP is pleased to welcome J. Donald McCarthy as a partner in its Los Angeles office. Formerly a partner in the Los Angeles office of Jones Day, McCarthy joins the firm's burgeoning Intellectual Property Practice Group, which has added 17 attorneys in seven offices firmwide since September 2007 alone.
A trial lawyer with 40 years of experience, McCarthy focuses his practice on patent litigation and trade regulation matters. He has served as lead trial and appellate counsel in several hundred matters filed in federal and state courts and administrative agencies, more than 50 of which have gone to trial and many of which were jury trials tried to verdict. He has represented clients in patent disputes concerning advanced technologies, such as semiconductors, integrated circuits, wireless communications, video signal processing and mechanical devices. In addition, he has handled numerous trademark litigation matters for brands such as Honda, Acura and General Motors and complex cases involving both parties claiming longtime use of the marks under dispute. He represents pharmaceuticals, electronics, and mechanical parts manufacturers and distributors as well as clients in other industries, enforcing their patents and defending against infringement claims. McCarthy has counseled clients in all aspects of developing, licensing and protecting IP portfolios, including registering trademarks and copyrights and acting as counsel in related litigation. In addition to his IP practice, he handles franchising and antitrust matters.
From 1974 to 1976, he was the Assistant Attorney General in the Pennsylvania Office of the Special Prosecutor in Philadelphia. McCarthy is active in the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and regularly speaks on intellectual property law and litigation. He is admitted to practice in California.
McCarthy earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1968. He graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University in 1965.
