Silverjet dodges the bullet

May 6, 2008 – SILVERJET has avoided the fate of its now defunct competitors MAXjet and Eos and is talking a good game about its future prospects.

The British premium-only carrier announced today that it had secured funding that would allow it to continue operating. Last week the airline revealed how much it needed the cash: “In the unlikely event that these agreements are not completed, we will have to source alternative means of funding as a matter of urgency.”

Silverjet, which offers passengers the Mezzo turnkey service based on eVU players from e.Digital, says it has secured an £8.4 million loan from US/UAE-based luxury development company Viceroy Holdings. This may be supplemented with the proceeds of a proposed “subscription” valued at £4.3 million.

“Viceroy is committed to the development and expansion of Silverjet, and proposes to inject further capital to develop our proposition,” says Lawrence Hunt, the carrier’s indomitable chief executive. “We are well placed to exploit the opportunities that exist in the all-business-class market, which we now dominate.”

The carrier has also reported a load factor of 67 per cent for its April operations, having sold 10,594 seats out of a possible 15,900. “We’re pleased to announce another good set of passenger statistics,” says Hunt. “Forward bookings are particularly strong, and yields have been growing steadily, averaging over £600 per seat last week. We expect further improvements this month.”

Silverjet is attracting a healthy level of repeat business, according to Hunt:Over 25 per cent of our customers have flown with us before and we now have over 2,000 corporates signed up for our loyalty programme, the Silverjet Set.”
