Portable electronics provide entertainment to commuters
A recent survey conducted by TryMedia Research asked 8,000 players of video and electronic games about their use of games during their commute. 30 percent of those surveyed played games while commuting, with the average gamer playing for 23 minutes each way. Cell phones were the most popular gaming platform.
Overview:
- A survey of 8,000 gamers found that they played up to 45 minutes a day traveling to and from work.
- The devices commuters used varied, but the average playing time was 23 minutes per trip.
- According to the ``Travel and Commute Gaming`` study, conducted by Trymedia Research, nearly one third of all commuters play games during their daily commutes.
- Devices varied, but the online survey of more than 8,000 game players showed that 30% of commuters turned on their laptops, clicked on their mobile phones or used portable gaming devices to play games.
- The average length of game play was 23 minutes per trip.
- In addition to commuters, the survey looked into activities during air travel.
- Reading, sleeping and watching in-flight movies are popular activities, of course, but 30% of the travelers who took at least one air trip a year said they ``often played`` games, and 16% said they played games every time they flew.
- * Those who played games to/from work generally spent more time commuting.
- * When traveling by airplane, laptop computers were the most often used platform to play games, followed by portable gaming devices.
- Employers may be unhappy to know that ``doing work`` on an airplane was last on the list of in-flight activities.
- And non-gaming drivers may be perplexed by the number of car commuters who play games!
- The 19th annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) was held at the Moscone Center West in San Francisco last week, with more than 10,000 game industry professionals from around the world in attendance, so more studies on gaming should be available soon.
