Sunday paper carried a byline from a HAL. S. STEIN, a professor of Statistics at Cal. deriding the present BCS system and explaining why there will not be a college footbal playoff.

In fact he concluded with an admonition to all the professional Statisticians to boycot the BSC and have nothing to do with it, because THE BIG SIX CONFERENCES DON'T WANT TO SHARE THE MONEY WITH THE SMALLER CONFERENCES, and that is the story that is not being told...

Under the current rule, the champions of the Atlantic Coast, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac Ten, and Southern conferences go to the BCS authomathically. This year the first team in each conference to qualify receives $18 million authomatically---win, loose or draw. That money is distributed in the team's conference. If a second team from the conference qualifies, the conference sharea another $4.5 million dollars.nother team...

The rules for the other five conferences are different. Boise State finished 12-0 and was ranked 9th in the BCS computer, nut they got only $750,000.00 to go to the Pointsettia Bowl in San Diego...

Any way, it is about MONEY, and he was right in his conclusion unless the publis speakes the system will not change...

Gil...
